More than 1,500 participants from Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and beyond gathered at the two-day event to discuss Asia\u2019s startup scene and rub shoulders with fellow entrepreneurs and investors. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With some guest speakers flying in from as far away as Silicon Valley, collaborations between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techinasia.com\/talk\/tokyo-bay-area\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo and the Bay Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an especially hot topic throughout the event.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/davemcclure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave McClure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"http:\/\/500startups.com\/\">f<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/500startups.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ounding partner of seed accelerator <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 Startup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/500startups.com\/\">s<\/a> (and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gengo.com\/about-us\/#investors\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gengo investor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced the introduction of a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2015\/09\/07\/500-startups-japan\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$30M fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the name <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/500startups.jp\/?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 Startups Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be dedicated to helping Japanese startups get on their feet.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TIA_image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1273\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TIA_image3.png\" alt=\"TIA_image3\" width=\"610\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading the fund will be former\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dena.com\/intl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeNA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> principal investor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Riney<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who believes that there is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/500.co\/james-riney\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untapped opportunity in Japan&#8217;s startup scene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a lack of financial support, making it the perfect time to invest in the country.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more investors look to Asia, Japanese startups grow eager to explore new markets and expand on a global scale.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a panel discussion, Gengo CEO and co-founder Matt Romaine spoke alongside <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ginzametrics.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginzametrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CEO Ray Grieselhuber and <\/span><a href=\"\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">btrax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CEO Brandon Hill, where they discussed strategies on how to build strong US\u2013Japan hybrid companies. Romaine explained the advantages of having a diverse team, which he believes can help bring together new ideas and viewpoints that allow businesses to grow. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you have different experiences and cultural backgrounds [in a company], the conversation becomes interesting,&#8221; he said. The speakers also discussed strategies to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/building-international-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build and manage an international team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and highlighted language, commitment, and empathy as key components to success.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TIA_image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1274\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TIA_image2.png\" alt=\"TIA_image2\" width=\"610\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On display at the central-Tokyo venue\u2014host to more than 150 companies\u2014were many innovative platforms and products aiming to help solve cultural and language problems from all over the world. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such company was the Taiwan-based social translation platform <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linqapp.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linqapp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which facilitates users to ask language-related questions through their app via text, image or audio. Native speakers then provide answers in real time to provide a free online language exchange. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another unique startup was South Korea\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fingerson.strikingly.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with their ambitious mission to make communication easier for the visually impaired through their braille smartwatch\u2014the world\u2019s first.
