We took a look at the 12 most widely spoken languages <\/span>in 2016<\/span><\/a> and found out how different cultures wish each other a happy new year:<\/span>\r\n

1. English<\/h3>\r\nStill the world\u2019s lingua franca, English has 375 million native English speakers and a vast majority of one billion people speak it as a second language<\/a>.\r\n\r\n(Pictured above) On January 1st, fireworks are meant to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck. 2. Mandarin Chinese<\/h3>\r\nBoasting a total of 1.1 billion native Chinese speakers and 982 million non-natives, it\u2019s no surprise Mandarin is named one of the <\/span>languages of the future<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\r\n\r\n

3. Hindi<\/h3>\r\nMostly influenced by the Sanskrit language, Hindi comes from the Persian word \u201cHind\u201d that means \u201cLand of the Indus River\u201d and is one of India\u2019s official languages.\r\n\r\n

4. Spanish<\/h3>\r\nThe second most studied language in the world, Spanish has 329 million native speakers and is projected to reach 600 million speakers by 2050.\r\n\r\n

5. Arabic<\/h3>\r\nSpoken by 300 million people residing in the Arab League from Southwest Asia to Northwest Africa, Arabic is the official language in over 20 countries.\r\n\r\n

6. Portuguese<\/h3>\r\nPortuguese is the official language of eight countries: Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and <\/span>S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 e Pr\u00edncipe<\/span>, with over 235 million speakers.<\/span>\r\n\r\n

7. French<\/h3>\r\nAn official language in many international institutions, from the UN to the European Union to the Olympics Committee, it is <\/span>estimated<\/span><\/a> that French will be spoken by 750 million people by 2050.<\/span>\r\n\r\n

8. Bengali<\/h3>\r\nBengali, or Bangla, is predominantly spoken in South Asia by over 230 million people from Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura. \u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n

9. Russian<\/h3>\r\nThe most widely spoken of all Slavic languages, Russian is the official language in the Russian Federation and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.\r\n\r\n

10. German<\/h3>\r\nAbout 105 million people speak German as their mother tongue and it is the official language in seven countries in the European Union.\r\n\r\n

11. Japanese<\/h3>\r\nOne of the most difficult languages to learn, there are only one million people who speak Japanese as a second language and about 127 million native speakers.\r\n\r\n

12. Korean<\/h3>\r\nWith 78 million native speakers, Korean, also known as Kugo, is the official language of South Korea and North Korea, but also spoken in China, Japan and Russia.\r\n\r\n
