Today, several countries worldwide have adopted the American holiday that typically involves spending time and getting in touch with one\u2019s father or father figure, and giving greeting cards or gifts.\r\n\r\nTo mark Father\u2019s Day, we asked Gengo staff from 16 nationalities and compiled the different endearing ways to call one&#8217;s father around the world:\r\n<h3>Japan<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em> third Sunday of June<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Oto-san (\u304a\u7236\u3055\u3093), To-san (\u7236\u3055\u3093), Papa (\u30d1\u30d1), Oyaji (\u89aa\u7236), Oto-chan (\u304a\u7236\u3061\u3083\u3093), To-chan (\u7236\u3061\u3083\u3093)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn Japan, parents are at the top of the family hierarchy so children often use the most respectable form <em>oto-san<\/em>, when addressing their fathers or referring to someone else\u2019s father. Papa is a friendlier and more affectionate term, while <em>oya-ji<\/em>, which translates to \u201cold man\u201d, is a very informal way to refer to one\u2019s father when talking to someone else outside the family.\r\n<h3>Italy<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em>\u00a0March 19<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Papa, P\u00e0, Babbo (in some regions like Tuscany)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nLargely influenced by Christianity, Italy celebrates Festa del Pap\u00e0 on the feast day of Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ.\r\n<h3>U.S.\/Canada<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em> third Sunday of June<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Dad, Daddy, Papa<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFather\u2019s Day was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington to honor her father, an American Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children.\r\n\r\n<div id=\"attachment_3061\" style=\"width: 1378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3061\" class=\"wp-image-3061 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2016_06_15-father-insert1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"632\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image by @SBphoto via <a href=\"\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twenty20<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3>Singapore<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em> third Sunday of June<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Papa, Pa, Daddy, Bapa (Malay), Appa (Tamil)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn Singapore, family members often treat fathers to a satisfying meal at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawker_centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local hawker centers<\/a>, restaurants, or hotels on this special day.\r\n<h3>France\/Belgium<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on: third Sunday of June (France), second Sunday of June (Belgium, except for Antwerp that honors fathers on March 19, St. Joseph\u2019s Day)<\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Papa<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn these countries, children usually greet their fathers, \u201cBonne F\u00eate, Papa\u201d and give them a small token of appreciation, like a handkerchief or a tie.\r\n<h3>Taiwan<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on: August 8<\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>\u7238\u7238 (b\u00e0b\u00e0), \u7238\u55f6 (b\u00e0b\u00ec), \u7239\u5730 (di\u0113-di), \u7236\u89aa (f\u00f9q\u012bn), \u7239 (di\u0113), \u591a\u6851 (To-san)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn Taiwan, Father&#8217;s Day is not an official holiday but is now widely observed on August 8 as the Chinese word for eight is \u201cba\u201d and the colloquial word for father is \u201cba-ba\u201d \u2013 so the eighth day of the eighth month sounds similar to \u201cDaddy\u201d.\r\n<h3>Australia<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em> first Sunday of September<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Dad, Daddy, Father, Papa, Pa<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFather\u2019s Day is observed on the first Sunday of spring in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji.\r\n\r\n<div id=\"attachment_3062\" style=\"width: 1378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3062\" class=\"wp-image-3062 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2016_06_15-father-insert2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"632\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image by Aleksander Nakic via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/jp\/en\/photo\/three-generations-of-men-gm672824348-123621575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iStock<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3>Spain<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em>\u00a0March 19 (St. Joseph\u2019s Day)<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Pap\u00e1, Papi<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nLike many European countries, <em>El D\u00eda del Padre<\/em> is also celebrated in Spain on the feast day of St. Joseph. On this day, loved ones give gifts or take their fathers to a nice meal in a restaurant to express their gratitude and affection.\r\n<h3>Russia<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em>\u00a0February 23<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>\u041f\u0430\u043f\u0430 (Papa), \u043f\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430 (Papochka),\u043f\u0430\u043f\u0443\u043b\u044f (Papulya), \u043f\u0430\u043f\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430 (Papen\u2019ka)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn Russia, the equivalent of Father\u2019s Day is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defender_of_the_Fatherland_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defender of the Fatherland Day<\/a>, a holiday that honors the men and women who are serving or were serving the Russian Armed Forces. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This day is also referred to as Men\u2019s Day or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c \u041c\u0443\u0436\u0447\u0438\u043d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Den&#8217; Muzhchin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a counterpart of International Women\u2019s Day.<\/span>\r\n<h3>Vietnam<\/h3>\r\n<em>Celebrates Father\u2019s Day on:<em> third Sunday of June<\/em><\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>B\u00f4\u0341, Ba, T\u00eda, Cha, B\u1ecd, Th\u1ea7y, C\u1eadu<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn Vietnam, <em>Ng\u00e0y c\u1ee7a Cha <\/em>(Father\u2019s Day) has only gained popularity in the last decade.
