Filipino, the national lingua franca based on Tagalog, has evolved in unique ways over time. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally spoken only in the capital city of Manila and its neighboring provinces, Tagalog spread to other parts of the country through traditional and digital media, local movies, and educational institutions. <\/span>In celebration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesummitexpress.com\/2017\/08\/buwan-ng-wika-2017-theme-official-memo-poster-sample-slogan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Language Month<\/a> <em>(Buwan ng Wika)<\/em> this August, we\u2019ve put together a list of Filipino expressions and slang used in daily conversations, particularly in the capital region:<\/p>\r\n<h3>1. Anyare?<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Meaning\/Usage:<\/strong> Short for \u201c<em>Anong nangyari?<\/em>\u201d (What happened?\u201d), this expression is uttered out of surprise during more lighthearted situations. It has no direct translation but it can be used as either a \u201cSigh!\u201d, \u201cOh my!\u201d, or an \u201cOh well!\u201d\u2019<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>Hay naku<\/em>, I\u2019m so tired of major traffic jams every day.<\/p>\r\n<h3>3.<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3345\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017_08_23-filipino-expressions2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"632\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Meaning\/Usage:<\/strong> \u201c<em>Bahala<\/em>\u201d is a derivative of the word \u201c<em>Bathala<\/em>\u201d, the ancient god worshipped by Filipinos during the pre-Spanish colonial period. This expression of surrender or faith also reflects fatalism back then. But in modern society, it is often uttered when things are beyond your control and is the equivalent of \u201cWhatever will be, will be.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> I was supposed to give a presentation with my boss today but she called in sick. <em>Bahala na!<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>4.<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3344 size-full\" title=\"filipino expressions\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017_08_23-filipino-expressions3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"632\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Meaning\/Usage:<\/strong> This acronym stands for \u201c<em>kanya-kanyang bayad<\/em>\u201d, which roughly translates to \u201cpay for yourself\u201d. Filipinos are highly sociable and tend to treat each other during special occasions. (Is it your treat?)<br \/>\r\nPerson 1: No, <em>KKB!<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>5.<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3355 size-full\" title=\"filipino expressions\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gengo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017_08_23-filipino-expressions5-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"632\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Meaning\/Usage:<\/strong> Figuratively speaking, this nasal hemorrhage happens when someone encounters something that\u2019s very difficult to understand and it\u2019s too much for the brain to handle. It is commonly used when a not-so-fluent Filipino speaks English (or any language other than their mother tongue) to a foreigner for extended periods of time or when reading a complex article that\u2019s hard to comprehend.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been researching about neurobiology since last night. This expression (and hashtag) was made popular by the Filipino romantic comedy, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/That_Thing_Called_Tadhana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>That Thing Called Tadhana<\/em><\/a> (fate) in 2014. Since then, \u201c<em>hugot<\/em> lines\u201d and memes that speak to the brokenhearted and \u201cvictims\u201d of unrequited love became a trend on social networks. By quoting these spot-on lines that capture what they\u2019re going through or have gone through, they can draw out certain emotions that they can relate with.\u00a0It&#8217;s no surprise the Philippines is considered one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20160623-living-in-the-worlds-most-emotional-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most emotional countries in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Example: <\/strong>\u201cMy relationship status?
